Cristiano Ronaldo apologized on Saturday for knocking a supporter’s mobile phone off the pitch after Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Everton. Footage surfaced on social media, showing the Portugal star colliding with an Everton supporter as he headed towards the tunnel at Goodison Park. Ronaldo, 37, wrote on Instagram, “Dealing with emotions in difficult moments is never as easy as the ones we are facing.” “Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set an example for all the young people who love the beautiful game.

“I would like to apologize for my anger and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship.”

United’s poor performance in relegation left them seventh in the table, six points behind the Champions League places.

The win at Goodison Park—courtesy of a first-half effort from Anthony Gordon—clears the bottom three to four points to Frank Lampard’s team, which has played more games than 18th-placed Burnley.

But United are in danger of having a bad season and their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League looks doomed.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Leicester last week after missing out on a 1-1 draw with out-of-form fellow forward Marcus Rashford, who was making his 200th Premier League appearance.

Rangnik has a two-year contract to remain as a consultant at United after this season, but his temporary stint as manager appears to be ending in bitter disappointment as speculation mounts that Ajax boss Eric Ten Haig will be the next permanent boss.

The German lamented his side’s lack of lead, but said talking over a new person in the hotseat should not be an excuse.

“We are Manchester United,” he said. “We have a lot of international players. There should be no excuse. There will be a new manager next season. If it is announced now or in 10 days it should have no effect.”
