Cattle smuggler killed in encounter with police in Assam

Officials said the occupants of the car fired at the police vehicle, which was retaliated in self-defense.

Guwahati: A cattle smuggler was killed in an encounter with the police in Dhubri district of Assam. Officials gave this information on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police tried to stop a vehicle in Sapatgram area on Saturday night, he said.

A police officer said, “The car was signaled to stop, but it sped away. Our team started chasing it.”

He said the occupants of the car fired at the police vehicle, which was retaliated in self-defense.

“Three people were in the vehicle. One of them died on the way to the hospital, while the other is still undergoing treatment,” he said.

The officer said one of the suspects managed to escape.

In another incident, a suspected dacoit was injured in police firing at Doboka in Naugaon district, officials said.

He said the suspect was arrested on Saturday, following which he was taken to recover the weapon hidden in the night.

A police officer said, “He pushed a constable and tried to run away. We had to open fire to ensure that he did not escape. He was injured in the right leg.”

A total of 43 people have been killed and at least 107 injured in police action since Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took office in May 2021.
