Patna: A government official, who registered a case in connection with the strange theft of a bridge in Bihar, was arrested on Sunday.

Eight were arrested by a sub-divisional officer (SDO) of the state’s water resources department in connection with the theft of a 60-foot abandoned bridge in Rohtas district.

Police said that a JCB or excavator, about 247 kg of stolen iron channels and other incriminating material have been recovered from the arrested people.

A gang of thieves pretending to be officials of the state’s irrigation department had pulled off the extravagant heist by publicly stealing a bridge from Amiyavar village, about 150 km from state capital Patna.

They arrived with excavators, pickup vans, gas cutters and cars and, in three days, slowly destroyed the 50-year-old iron bridge. Then they disappeared.

Police said they sold it in parts as scrap metal.

The villagers had assumed that the government had decided to demolish the old bridge over the water canal, as it was not in use.

The day the “disruption” began, the sub-divisional officer had reportedly called the sick to avoid theft.

The report said that a government engineer was also present when the bridge was being taken apart.
