Sensex up 929 points on first trading day of 2022

Overall market breadth remained positive in 2,689 stocks, while 875 shares declined on the BSE.

New Delhi: Indian equity benchmarks ended higher on the first trading day of 2022 led by gains in banking and auto stocks. The 30-share BSE Sensex on Monday closed 929 points or 1.60 per cent higher at 59,183, while the broader NSE Nifty closed 272 points or 1.57 per cent higher at 17,626. The BSE index rose over 1,000 points to hit a high of 59,266 from its previous close.

Mid and smallcap stocks jumped, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index up 1.33 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index up 1.15 per cent.

Of the 15 sector gauges, 13 – compiled by the National Stock Exchange – settled in the green. Nifty Banking, Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Auto jumped up to 2.65 per cent.

On the stock-specific front, Coal India was the top gainer in Nifty as the stock rose 6.37 per cent to Rs 155.35. State-run miners reported a 3.3 percent increase in December production.

Eicher Motors, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel and ICICI Bank also saw gains.

Further, Zomato jumped 2.73 per cent as the food delivery platform said it received over 2 million orders for the first time on Friday.

On the flipside, Cipla, Dr Reddy’s, Mahindra & Mahindra, Divi’s Lab and Tech Mahindra fell up to 1.31 per cent.

Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank were the top gainers on the BSE index with their shares rising 3.50 per cent.
