IIT Kharagpur reports 60 COVID cases in 2-day jump; 40 hey

COVID cases at IIT Kharagpur: 60 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 at IIT Kharagpur.

Kharagpur: Sixty persons, including 40 students and researchers residing on the campus of IIT Kharagpur, have tested positive for COVID-19, an official said on Tuesday.

IIT Kharagpur registrar Tamal Nath told PTI that most of the infected people are mild symptomatic or asymptomatic and are either in home isolation or in isolation wards created in the hostels of the prestigious engineering institute.

Apart from student-researchers, 20 others are from non-teaching staff and faculty.

Mr Nath said the situation was under control as the hospital within the campus was monitoring the condition of those infected.

“We are urging the IIT Kharagpur family members to get themselves tested whenever they have fever-like symptoms and they are following our advice. Thus the number of 60 infected is known. We are out of the world No. With a sudden spike in the number of Covid cases all around, we also have to face the (emergency) situation,” he said.

He said that after the convocation of the institute on December 18, IIT-Kharagpur had decided to bring the students back to the campus in a phased manner after a gap of one and a half year.

“But with the sudden surge in Covid in the last two days, we are again resuming classes in campus mode and sticking to online classes only,” he said.

When asked whether the holding of classes on the campus would now be postponed indefinitely, Mr Nath said, “The students were eager to return to the campus, we all want the campus activities to resume. But (Now, we have) no idea when that might happen.”

Another official of the institute said that after December 27, around 2000 students came to the campus, but after Covid reappeared with a vengeance, that process has been put on hold.
