10,860 new covid cases in Mumbai, 89% are asymptomatic

More than 26,000 new coronavirus cases have been reported in Mumbai.

Mumbai: Mumbai today witnessed another major jump in coronavirus infections with 10,860 new cases, which is 34 per cent higher than yesterday (8,082). Eighty percent of these infections (9,665) are asymptomatic.

Out of the total fresh cases, 834 patients required hospitalisation, the daily bulletin shows, adding that 52 patients also required medical oxygen.

Experts believe that Omicron, the new highly contagious variant, is behind the current surge in cases in big cities, including Mumbai.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases of the new variant in the country – over 500 out of the nearly 1,900 infections recorded so far.

Today, speaking to NDTV, the city’s mayor Kishori Pednekar told NDTV that India’s financial capital is also ready to face a “tsunami” of cases.

“We have followed the WHO guidelines. We have jumbo quarantine centers ready. While the city and Maharashtra will do their best to contain the spread, even if a tsunami hits, we should be prepared,” he told NDTV.
