Bayern Munich are facing the prospect of not being able to field a team for Friday’s Bundesliga encounter with Borussia Moenchengladbach after Leroy Sane and Dayat Upamecano joined a long list of Covid-19 positives on Tuesday. “Both players are fine and in isolation,” Bayern said in a statement. The two were tested on Monday along with young defender Josip Stanisic, who tested negative and was allowed to attend group training. This takes Bayern’s number of players to eight who have now been sidelined by Covid.

Manuel Neuer, Kingsley Koman, Corentin Tolisso, Omar Richards, Lucas Hernandez and Tanguy Nianzo have already tested positive for coronavirus after returning from their vacation.

In December, the Bavarian said they would be without Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich for four weeks after contracting the virus.

Kimmich sparked a heated debate in October when he revealed that he had rejected a vaccine against COVID because of “personal concerns”, but last month he said he was happy to have received a jab.

Bayern are also without striker Erik Maxim Chopo-Motting and defender Dwarf Sir, who are both involved in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The German Football League (DFL) only allows matches to be postponed for medical reasons if a team cannot name at least 15 players on the team sheet, which is still not the case with Bayern.

Bayern, who are nine points away from Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga, resume their league campaign on Friday by hosting Moenchengladbach, which will be played behind closed doors due to the pandemic.
