“Really Immature”: Gautam Gambhir Blames Virat Kohli

Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Thursday slammed India Test captain Virat Kohli for his reaction to the controversial DRS decision during the ongoing third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. The former Indian opener said that Kohli’s response was “exaggerated” and “really immature”. Indian players were upset after the controversial Decision Review System (DRS) call helped South Africa captain Dean Elgar reverse his lbw decision in the fourth innings of the Cape Town Test.

The incident happened in the 21st over of the innings which Ashwin bowled. The spinner bowled a flying ball, which hit Elgar from the inside edge and went inside and hit him just past the stumps, and the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus raised his finger.

However, Elgar reviewed the decision and replays showed that the ball was going over the stumps, and so the decision was overturned.

KL Rahul, skipper Virat Kohli and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin gave different reactions to the controversial call. First, Mike caught Ashwin saying: “You must find better ways to win, SuperSport (South African broadcaster).

Then Virat Kohli walked towards the stump mic and said: “Focus on your team too, not just the opposition, trying to catch people all the time.”

KL Rahul finally said: “The whole country is playing against the XI guys.”

After the day’s play was over, Gambhir said in a conversation with Star Sports: “It’s really bad. What Kohli did, went to the stump mic and reacted in that way, he’s really immature. It’s not him.” It’s what you expect from someone. International captain, an Indian captain. Then the technique is not in your hands. Then you have reacted the same way when there was a catch-back appeal on the leg-side, neither did Dean Elgar like that During that time Mayank Agarwal appealed, saw it with naked eye, but Elgar did not react in that way.”

Gambhir said he expects head coach Rahul Dravid to discuss his antics with Kohli on Thursday.

“No matter what you say, he plays with his heart on his sleeve, this reaction was an exaggeration and you can’t be a role model like this. No budding cricketer would want to see a reaction like this, especially Indian captain.

“No matter what happens in this Test match, you don’t expect that from a Test captain who has led the team for so long. I hope Rahul Dravid has a word with him, because the way captain Dravid is. Of course, he would have never reacted like this,” Gambhir said.
