CS Channi’s assets decreased by Rs 5 crore, Sukhbir Badal’s wealth increased

Punjab Elections: Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has lost more than Rs 5 crore.

A few days before the assembly elections in Punjab, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has submitted a report which shows that the assets of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi have come down by over Rs 5 crore, while that of his predecessor Amarinder Singh. There has been an increase in the assets of Rs. 20 crore since 2017. The report further stated that Sukhbir Singh Badal of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has seen an increase of Rs 100 crore in his net worth since the last assembly election.

According to the ADR report, Chief Minister Channi had declared assets worth Rs 14.51 crore in 2017, which came down to Rs 9.45 crore this year. Similarly, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu’s assets saw a decline of Rs 1.25 crore – from Rs 45.90 crore in 2017 to Rs 44.65 crore this year.

The ADR report was released on Wednesday. It is based on the analysis of affidavits of 101 MPs contesting the re-assembly elections by ADR and Punjab Election Watch. Polling for 117 seats in Punjab will be held in a single phase on February 20 (Sunday).

In 2017, the average assets of these 101 re-contesting MLAs, including from different parties and independent candidates, stood at Rs 13.34 crore, which has now increased to Rs 16.10 crore, the report said.

The average asset growth of these MPs in the last five years is Rs 2.76 crore or 21 per cent.

It has also listed five MPs with the highest asset growth. The list is topped by SAD’s Sukhbir Singh Badal, who announced an increase of Rs 100 crore in his assets – from Rs 102 crore in 2017 to Rs 202 crore in 2022. Manpreet Singh Badal, Aman of Congress are also named in this. Arora of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Amarinder Singh (who has now formed the Punjab Lok Congress Party) and Angad Singh are independent MLAs.

Manpreet Singh Badal saw an increase of Rs 32 crore in his assets – from Rs 40 crore to Rs 72 crore – AAP’s Aman Arora saw an increase in the value of his assets by Rs 29 crore, the ADR report said.

The party-wise comparison of assets of re-contesting MLAs paints an interesting picture. The assets of 67 ruling Congress MLAs increased by Rs 1.47 crore in the last five years, while the average increase in the property value of SAD MPs was Rs 8.18 crore. The assets of 10 AAP MPs increased by Rs 3.21 crore and that of Punjab Lok Congress’s Amarinder Singh increased by Rs 20.41 crore.
