Ranji Trophy: Baroda Gain Upper Hand As Bengal Fold 88 Runs

Baroda pacers Atit Sheth and Lukman Meriwala shared eight wickets as they bundled out for 88 runs through the Bengal lineup in their Ranji Trophy Group B match here on Friday. Starting the day at 24/1, Bengal lost nine wickets for 64 runs in 21.3 overs as they could not last a session with the Baroda bowlers. Only four of their batsmen Sudip Gharami (21), Sudip Chatterjee (11), Abhishek Porel (21) and Shahbaz Ahmed (20) reached double digits.

Former Bengal captain and West Bengal Deputy Sports Minister Manoj Tiwary, who made a comeback to cricket after joining politics, was dismissed for naught. Anustup Majumdar was also dismissed for a duck off just seven balls as Sheth was on his way to his best figures of 13.3-3-44-5. Left-arm pacer Meriwala finished with 3/15 as Bengal were bundled out in 34.3 overs.

Baroda, who scored just 181 runs in their first innings, made 144/5 in 52 overs to take a 237-run lead at the end of the day.

Captain Kedar Deodhar was the top scorer for Baroda in his second essay with 41, while Ishan Porel claimed 2/50 for Bengal.

Bengal head coach Arun Lal, however, said if their batsmen respond well in the second innings, they can still compete.

“We have to bat very well now. There is no other way, we need to fight back and remember that otherwise we will lose the match as there are only two days left. It is possible on this wicket,” Lal said.

“Our veteran batsman Anustup’s decision was questionable but it happens again in cricket. No excuse. Baroda bowlers were skilled, they bowled well but the wicket was not impossible to get out for 88.” Brief scores at Barabati Stadium: Baroda 181 and 144/5; 52 overs (Kedar Deodhar 41; Ishan Porel 2/50). Bengal 88; 34.3 overs (Athit Sheth 5/44, Lukman Meriwala 3/15).
